However, that doesn't mean you have to read a dictionary for 6 hours a day; learning can be a lot of fun, no matter your age. In this article, we've collected our five favorite dictionary games. Enjoy!

Scrabble

The iconic classic that's still beloved by millions the world over. Created in 1931 before being redesigned and launched in 1948, Scrabble has become so successful that over half of homes in the UK own a board and a third of American families too! The premise is simple, a player receives seven letter tiles and is tasked with utilizing them to create a unique world on the board in front of them - the skill, however, is using your wits, vocabulary, and imagination to keep the game going when you're running out of space.

Words With Friends

A modern interpretation of the Scrabble formula, Words With Friends has really helped bring dictionary games into the digital age. First released in 2009 by games developer Zynga, the social media savvy dictionary game now has over 170 million registered users over a decade later. No board required; the joy of Words With Friends is the ability to play with friends or strangers on your phone, tablet, or desktop. Before long, the pursuit for a high score will be boosting your vocabulary like never before!

Fictionary

Fictionary, a game you have probably played with your friends and never realised it! The premise of this game has been used by TV and radio shows for years, and is often known as 'The Dictionary Game' or simply 'Dictionary'. The premise of the game is to identify the correct definition of a strange or obscure word that you've probably never heard before. You score points by guessing the correct meaning and tricking others not to do the same. It requires cunning, creative thinking and it's very fun!

Boggle

A true classic; Boggle is a simple game that puts quick thinking and word recognition to the test. You've probably encountered this game before, but let's quickly summarise. A group of players sit around a game grid of typically 16 random letters, and against the clock, they must find as many words as possible! The player with the most words wins.

Word Hub

If Boggle interests you, but you haven't got the board to play, the Word Hub is an amazing online alternative. Word Hub works in the same way that Boggle does, but with a few key differences. Rather than 16 letters to play with, you have fair less, starting with only 5. The aim is to consistently find words from the letters without using hints! However if you do get stuck, then the hints end up being a real lifesaver!
